Free eye screenings are perhaps the only chance for the marginalized to get checked for various eye diseases. Our foundation conducts eye camps in most North Indian states aimed at free eye screenings for people with low incomes and those lacking access to eye care.
In the battle against preventable blindness and eye disorders, until today, our doctors & optometrists have conducted tens of thousands of free eye screenings for the timely detection of vision disorders and vision-threatening eye diseases among the poor & underprivileged.
Like glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy, these diseases often get worse over time, and signs don’t show up until the disease has gotten really bad. This is why annual eye exams or periodic screenings are so crucial for finding problems early. By finding these conditions early on, we can start treatment right away, stopping further damage that could lead to blindness.
Poor areas need to have free eye exams. These people often can’t get regular eye care because they can’t afford it, which makes them more likely to get eye problems that aren’t fixed. We at Ekjyot Charitable Foundation make sure that everyone, no matter how poor or remote they are, can get this critical health service by giving tests away for free through our free eye camps.
Quite often, these eye examination camps are helpful in the detection of refractive errors like near-sightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). Although not as bad as some other eye diseases, refractive errors can have a significant effect on a person’s life and work if they are not fixed. Giving away corrective eyewear and glasses to the affected is a standard practice that we adopt during our mass screening drives in remote, inaccessible areas. With such corrective wear, youth are able to continue their schools & colleges while adults who can’t work because of impaired vision can make all the difference in the world.
Last but not least, free eye exams are an easy but helpful way to help stop avoidable blindness and age-related eye diseases. This is perhaps the main reason that we go out chasing such cases that eventually drive help in the detection and treatment of avoidable blindness cases. They allow for early diagnosis and quick treatment, and they can make these poor people’s lives better from all walks of life. We are making a big step towards a world where no one is blind for no reason by implementing programmes that offer free eye exams.
