Challenge & what we do
In India, there are an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 ophthalmologists, a ratio of one ophthalmologist to 100,000 people. This is more than 5 times above the World Health Organization’s recommended ratio of 1 ophthalmologist per 20,000 - a serious shortage of manpower. In order to counter this huge disparity between demand and supply, Government has commissioned a country wide drive entailing a huge number of surgeries in eye camps stretching at instances to a nonstop 500 hours. But Government alone cannot cope with the sheer number of new cataract cases adding to the existing. Situation demands an all out concerted effort to tackle this colossal health hazard confronting our nation.
